Description of the flag

Fairfax City, Virginia, an independent city incorporated in 1961. As an independent city, it is not part of Fairfax County, although it is surrounded by the county and in fact the county's courthouse, jail, and main library are located within the city limits.

Fairfax City is essentially a bedroom community for Washington as well an attractive restaurant and shopping center. It is also densely populated with lawyers serving what I understand is the state's busiest court system.
Joe McMillan, 6 March 2004

In June 2022 the Fairfax City Council adopted a new city seal to replace the seal that included the 6th Lord of Fairfax, who had no direct connection with the city, and John Quincy Marr, the first Confederate soldier to be killed in combat during the US Civil War.

On December 7, 2022, a new city flag with the new seal was presented: https://www.facebook.com/cityoffairfaxva

The flag is a shade of pale grayish blue which I may not quite have captured, with the city seal on the center. The seal is a rounded triangle with the coat of arms on the center, a variation on the Fairfax family arms used as the county coat of arms. The city arms are barry argent and gules a lion rampant within a bordure embattled azure. The supporters are a Confederate and a Continental officer.

Variant of the flag

While looking through the flags used in some of the ceremonies at the Virginia Associations of Chiefs of Police conferences on their website, I noticed that the flag used to represent the city of Fairfax is not the same as the one we have on FOTW. The version posted by Joe McMillan shows the city seal centered on a greyish-blue field. The blue on the seal itself is a deeper, royal blue.

The version of the flag displayed on the VACP website features the same basic design of the city seal centered on the field, though the blue field appears to be more of a sky blue. Additionally, the blue in the seal is no longer the deeper, royal shade of blue, but matches the field of the flag.
