Lesley University originates in a school founded in 1909 by Edith Lesley
(1872-1953), the eldest daughter of a working class family from Maine. After
working as a kindergarten teacher and taking classes at Radcliffe College, she
opened her own school in 1909. Her goal: to prepare teachers for the growing
kindergarten movement. The first classes were held in her family’s home in
Cambridge, Massachusetts. In 1943, Massachusetts granted the authority to confer
B.Sc. in Education degrees. The name was changed to Lesley College. Lesley began
offering master's degree programs in 1953, and in 1954 opened a coeducational
graduate school. In 2000, Lesley College became Lesley University.
Around
the time that Edith Lesley opened her school, Boston artist Roy Atherton
Davidson founded the School of Practical Arts in 1912. Davidson sought an
alternative to the typical art training of his day. His school grew into the Art
Institute of Boston, and became part of Lesley in 1998. It was renamed the
Lesley University College of Art and Design in 2013.
Lesley University is
composed of two Colleges (Liberal Arts & Science, Art & Design) and two Graduate
Schools (Education, Arts & Social Science). Undergraduate and graduate programs
are offered in Arts & Design, Counseling & Psychology, Expressive Therapies,
Science & Mathematics, Business Management, Education, Social Sciences, and
Humanities.

The flag of Lesley University is "a bold and sophisticated design – featuring
two shades of Lesley green and 'Lesley' in crisp white lettering.
Struck
by the absence of a flag when he arrived at Lesley in 2016, President Weiss
conceived of the idea of a Lesley flag. He tapped College of Art and Design
professor Heather Shaw to herald the project, which she opened up to all design
students. Guided by standards set by the North American Vexillological
Association and informed by Lesley’s logo, the students embraced the principles
of good flag design, including bold shapes that can be seen from a distance and
a maximum of three distinct colors. A larger group of around 20 students worked
on the initial prototyping process and created a series of thumbnails. The
students completed the project over the course of the Spring 2017 semester. The
flag was committed to fabric over the summer and raised at the start of the fall
semester.
The final design of the flag is credited to students Michael
Coleman, Christine Lopez Coradao and Raine Ferrin.
