Peñarol is the most popular of the soccer Clubs of Uruguay, with
nearly a million fans.
This club, which was once the World champion of champions, inherited
its name and flag from the Central Uruguay Railway Cricket Club, which
was founded in the 1890s. This was an association of the workers of the
Uruguayan railroad companies, which were British. "Peñarol"
is a corruption of the name of a small town in Italy named Pinerolo
(in french, Pignerol).
It is the name of a suburb of Montevideo, where the railroad workshops
were. The Central Uruguay Railroad company was nationalized en the late
1940s. Untill that date the company kept its name, Ferrocarril
Central del Uruguay.

The colours are black and yellow; it is believed that they were
imported from the British Isles by the first employees and workers
who came to Uruguay to found the Company.

The design is not really Uruguyan, since the
Uruguyan stripes are (white-blue-white) × 3,
whereas the Peñarol stripes are (black-yellow-black) × 3.

There are several flag variants of the Peñarol's flag. The changes are just details. Sometimes the yellow is a little darker or lighter. And in this particular one, the stars are a little smaller.
