It appears from Carr's Flags of the World ([car61])
that Upper and Lower Aulaqui (Awlaki) were sheikdoms, not sultanates.
Santiago Dotor, 8 May 2003
They were sultanates. The name of "Sheikdom of Upper Awlaki," frequently applied, creates confusion
because in reality the sheiks Al Yaslami ruled the area called Nissiyin
(the frontier zone with Beihan), with their capital city in Wasit, under
the superior sovereignty of the Sultans of Upper Awlaki. The neighbors of the sheiks were the sheiks of
Wahidi, in fact the sheiks of Irma (head city Iyad) in Northern Wahidi Haban,
also on the frontier with Beihan. Between both sheiks were the sheiks of Maan, who, it seems, profiting
from the disputes between Awlaki and Wahidi, were in fact independent of both. There were also
sheiks in Lower Awlaki, the sheiks of Ba Kazim, in the northwest of the sultanate near the frontier
with Fadhli and Dathina (and with Upper Awlaki).
These sheiks were vassals of the sultan of Lower Awlaki.
