See also:Midrand (home of our esteemed colleague Martin Grieve!) is located
midway between Johannesburg and
Pretoria. The original municipal flag
comprised a dark blue field in the centre of which were the full
municipal arms in the centre of a white disc with the name of the town
beneath. This flag was
adopted on 01 July 1981 soon after the area attained municipal status.
The white, silver and blue alluded to the Witwatersrand, on the edge of
which Midrand is to be found. The arched partition line in the Arms,
which stretches horizontally, was a reference to the word RAND (ridge)
and the gold tower placed in the MID-dle of this ridge refers to the
name of the municipality, hence Midrand.

The blazon of the arms registered by the Bureau of South African Bureau of Heraldry and granted
to the Midrand Town Council on 15 October 1982 is as follows:
ARMS: Per fess enarched Azure and Argent on a pale
counterchanged, a tower Or
CREST: Out of a mural crown Azure masoned Argent a trimount Or
WREATH AND MANTLING: Argent and Azure
MOTTO: RUS IN URBE (Countryside in Town).
With the re-organisation of South African local government in December
1994 and again in December 2000, Midrand is no longer a separate
municipality and now falls under the jurisdiction of the Greater
Johannesburg Metropolitan Council. Consequently the original municipal
flag is no longer flown.
