Thaba Chweu Municipality

Thaba Chweu Local Municipality is located in Mpumalanga and comprises the former local authorities of Lydenberg, Sabi, Graskop and Pilgrim’s Rest.  The new municipal flag is a heraldic banner of the shield from the new municipal arms for which application for registration with the South African Bureau of Heraldry was notified on 19 December 2003.  The application for registration of the municipal flag on the same date gave the following description:

“A rectangular flag, proportion 2:3, consisting of four horizontal bands namely an upper blue band the lower dancetty, charged in the centre with a yellow demi-sun issuant from the upper edge of the flag; a central white band the upper edge dancetty charged with a green band, the upper edge fir tree topped, there below a band paly wavy of blue and white”.

The blue and white wavy lines at the bottom of the flag symbolize rivers and falls, in particular the wetland and Lonecreek Falls, the Blyde, Sterkspruit and Dorps Rivers which pass through the municipality and flow into the Olifants River in northern Limpopo Province.  The green pine trees refer to forestry and agriculture which are prominent in the area.  The mountain (the serrated white fimbriation above the green trees) symbolizes the geographic situation of the area and the mist covering the green forest.  The blue sky symbolizes hope and peace with the sun representing economic potential and the brightness of the area.
