The district of Florentino Ameghino (locally known as Ameghino; 8,276
inhabitants in 2000; 1,825 sq. km) is located in the northeastern part
of the Buenos Aires Province, 500 km of La Plata. The district is made
of the settlements of Florentino Ameghino proper (capital), Blaquier
and El Porvenir.
Florentino Ameghino was founded, as Halsey, on a plot offered by Diego
Tetley from his estate "La Chacra" to build a railway station. The day
of appearance of the first locomotive, 1 November 1896, is considered
as the date of foundation of the settlement. Halsey was renamed
Florentino Ameghino in 1913 as a tribute to the famous Argentine
palaeontologist Florentino Ameghino (1854-1911). The same year, the
struggle for municipal autonomy started. A first achievement was
obtained in 1917, when Ameghino became a Municipal Delegation.
The district of Florentino Ameghino was established by Provincial Law
No. 11071 of 21 March 1991, seceding from General Pinto.
Blaquier was founded on a plot offered by Alberto Blaquier. The day of
appearance of the first locomotive, 1 December 1905, is considered as
the date of foundation of the settlement. In November 1906, the plans
of the new settlement were drafted, under the name of Príncipe di
Piemonte, which was quickly replaced by the original name of the
railway station.
El Porvenir was founded in 1906 on the plot of the same name offered
by Patricio Dowling.

The flag of the district of Florentino Ameghino, designed by Pr.
Teresia Saganias de Wilson, is blue with three silver stars forming a
triangle pointing upwards.
Blue is the color of the sky and of the national flag. The single,
uniform colour symbolizes the unity characterising the district. The
three stars represent the three settlements of Florentino Ameghino
proper, Blaquier and Porvenir; their colour evokes "Argentinity".
