Coat of arms of Sokolac - Image by Željko Heimer, 28 January 2013
The coat of arms of Sokolac (municipal website), adopted in 2001, is prescribed in the Municipal Statutes Statut Opštine Sokolac (text), adopted on 14 July 2005 by the Municipal Assembly and published in the Town of Istočno Sarajevo official gazette Službene novine Grada Istočno Sarajevo, No. 10, as follows:
The symbol of the municipality of Sokolac is in a shield shape. The symbol is composed of three parts depicted in three colours: red, blue and white.
In the top part there are rocks depicted - a mountain coloured white (symbolizing Mount Romanija). Under the rocks on left and right are two tricolour flags falling in a mild slope towards each other and connecting behind the central part. They represent the Glasinac plateau (Glasinačka visoravan).
In the central part, coloured blue, is depicted in white a church - Romanijska Lazarica, surrounded with a mountain knife [a circular saw] symbolizing wood industry. The fields left and right of the church are shown in white. In the field left of the church is with blue colour depicted a Serbian spruce [Picea omorika, Pančićeva omorika] symbolizing the wood respuorces of the region. In the right field is a blue wheat ear, symbolizing wheat crops and other crops grown in the municipal territory.
In the third, bottom part coloured red there is a white cross symbolizing that the municipality of Sokolac has been Serbian land for centuries. Between the second and third part is inscribed in blue letters on a white background the name "Sokolac" in Cyrillic of Miroslav Gospel*.
*Miroslavljevo Jevanđelje, a 12th century manuscript considered the most precious and significant document in Serbian cultural heritage; its script is used nowadays as the most ceremonial form of Cyrillic font in Serbia.
The coat of arms is almost identical to the coat of arms of Vlasenica, so much as being almost indistinguishable - the minor differences in shapes, inscription and artistic details are way to small to be eligible for differentiation. It seems obvious that it is a product of the same designer.
It is hard to say which one is the oldest: the coat of arms of Sokolac was reportedly adopted in 2001, while the coat of arms for Vlasenica might have been adopted before 2006 and inclusion into the Municipal Statutes.
