Eckernförde Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms: In a golden (= yellow) shield over three blue barrulets wavy stands a blue tower, masoned silver(= white) with a close blue and silver (= white) gate. The tower is topped by a red, statant squirrel. Meaning: The location was first mentioned in 1197 as "Ekerenvorde" and gained city rights in the 13th century, proven by a charter from 1288. The city rights due to the Schleswig type were confirmed in 1543. The city belonged to the Gottorf branch of the dukes of Schleswig until 1721. The coat of arms is based upon seals from the 14th and 15th century. The current version was fixed in 1934. An approval can't be traced. The tower as part of the city's fortification is representing the status of a city. Squirrel (Lower German: Ekeren) and the barrulets wavy ,representing a ford, are canting elements. According to early reports in this place existed lots of squirrels and the Danish Wohld was afforested so closely that a squirrel could manage the way from Eckernförde to Kiel without touching the ground. Source: Reißmann 1997, p.125 and Stadler 1970, p.97

The flag was never approved officially. The coat of arms is traditional. The artist of the current version is Erwin Nöbbe from Flensburg.
