Rendsburg City Flag

Description of flag:
Rendsburg is a city, the seat of Rendsburg-Eckernförde county. The Hauptsatzung of Rendsburg, available online here, says: The colours of the city are red-white-red. The flag of the city shows the red castle of the arms in white, slightly shifted towards the hoist, accompanied above and below by a thin red stripe along the edge.
Stefan Schwoon, 7 Sep 2001

Please can you tell me the Castle on the flag of Rendsburg, where is it,and to which family did it belong originally?
This castle is also our family crest.
Dirk van Rensburg, 18 Jul 2006

See this webpage: "It is the "Reinholdsburg" on the Eider island, which guarded the passage over the Eider river at the border between Holstein and Schleswig".
Jarig Bakker, 18 Jul 2006

The ratio is 3:5. It is a white flag with horizontal red stripes on the top- and bottom-edge. The coat of arms without shield and without wavy barrulets is in the white stripe and shifted to the hoist.

Rendsburg Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a silver shield over blue and silver (= white) barrulets wavy stands a red castle consisting of an embattled wall crowned by three towers with blue roofs. The central tower is bigger and has three black windows. The other towers have just one window each. The wall has an open gate. In the gate is a red inescutcheon displaying a silver (= white) nettle leaf.
Meaning:
The coat of arms is based upon the oldest seal from 1360. The seal is displaying Reinhold's castle, which was located on an island in the middle of Eider river, controlling the way from Holstein to Schleswig. The castle was first mentioned in 1200, the city in 1253. In the late medieval the city played an important role in the struggle for the duchy of Schleswig. The design changed several times. The inescutcheon with nettle leaf was first added in 1580 in order to demonstrate the affiliation with Holstein. The colours of the current version are those of Schleswig-Holstein.

Flag and coat of arms were approved on 30 December 1964. The artist is Wilhelm Horst Lippert from Brunsbüttel.

Reported Variant

[Rendsburg variant ] 3:5 image by Stefan Schwoon, 7 Sep 2001

I did once again cycle towards the Danish-German border, and back again. As a result I saw some Dutch and some German flags. Rendsburg as reported last year, as the most southern example of this kind of flag, which caused it to end up on our Danish pages: Shield on white flag.
Peter Hans van den Muijzenberg, 27 Aug 2001

The Hauptsatzung of Rendsburg describes a completely different design though. Did you see any flags matching this description?
