Intoduction of Mittelholstein Subcounty

On 1 January 2007 the municipality of Hohenwestedt and the subcounties of Aukrug, Hanerau-Hademarschen and Hohenwestedt-Land signed an administrative cooperation (Verwaltungsgemeinschaft) treaty. On 1 January 2012 the cooperation was transformed into a new administrative entity: Mittelholstein Subcounty was born. Mittelholstein is the southern stripe of Rendburg-Eckernförde County, consists of 30 municipaliteis, which had altogether nearly 24,000 inhabitants at the end of 2011. The capital is Hohenwestedt.

Mittelholstein Subcounty Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a blue shield is a golden (= yellow) wreath made from 10 trefoils.
Meaning:
The leaves of the trefoils, turning outwards, are symbolising the 30 municipalities being independent, but connected by the subcounty and willing to grow together. The blue colour is symbolising the sky and the water. The yellow colour is symbolising the harvest, gained by the merger of municipalities.

Aukrug Subcounty Coat of Arms

In the centre of a red shield is a golden (= yellow) wheel with five spokes. At each spoke is a silver (= white) acorn, turning outwards.
Meaning:
The acorns are symbolising the municipalities of Arpsdorf, Aukrug, Ehndorf, Padenstedt and Wasbek. The wheel is symbolising the administration of the subcounty as a central function and the mobility of the inhabitants.

Hohenwestedt-Land Subcounty Coat of Arms

The shield is divided by 14 alternating red and silver (= white) girons. In the centre is a blue inescutcheon displaying a silver (= white) double-oak.
Meaning:
The girons are symbolising the 14 municipalities of the former subcounty. Those were: Beringstedt, Grauel, Heinkenborstel, Jahrsdorf, Meezen, Mörel, Nienborstel, Nindorf, Osterstedt, Rade bei Hohenwestedt, Remmels, Tappendorf, Todenbüttel and Wapelfeld. The double-oak is symbolising the undissolvable union between Schleswig and Holstein and is alluding to the merger of the subcounties of Beringstedt and Hohenwestedt-Land in 1975. The colours are those of Schleswig-Holstein.

The flag was approved on 25 February 1989. The coat of arms was approved on 4 May 1988. Flag and coat of arms were abolished on 31 December 2011. The artist is Ilse Kaulbarsch from Bargteheide.
