The parish of San Roque (987 inhabitants in 2001) is part of Piñas canton (El
Oro province).
San Roque, originally known as La Cría, was renamed for its patron saint, St.
Roch. When established a parish of Zarma canton in 1939, the village was renamed
Ambrosio Maldonado. The parish was transferred in 1941 to newly established
Piñas canton; its original name was re-established while the parish of Capiro
was created, separating from San Roque.

The symbols of San Roque were adopted on 10 September 1965 by the Parish
Council and confirmed on 2 February 1967 by the Canton Council. The flag is
horizontally divided white-yellow-green. White is a symbol of peace and
tranquillity. Yellow is a symbol of the fruit ripeness, the fertility of the
soil, and the resources in gold. Green is a symbol of cultivated fields, of the
greenness of fertile beaches, and of hope.
