Presentation of Peñaflor de Hornija

The municipality of Peñaflor de Hornija (361 inhabitants in 2009; 6,643 ha) is located in the center of Valladolid Province, 30 km from Valladolid.

Peñaflor de Hornija was in 1202 the capital of an alfoz (group of villages) set up by King Alfonso VII, including the subsequently deserted villages of Pinilla, Villafrela, Quiñón and Salvador; Alfonso X the Wise granted the village with a Royal charter. In the 14th century, the village belonged to the Council of Valladolid.
As a fortified place, Peñaflor de Hornija was often sacked during the political unrest of the 15th-16th century; in 1465, the village took Henry IV's party and was completely destroyed. Peñaflor de Hornija played a significant role in the battle of Villalar, which took place on 23 April 1521 during the Revolt of the Comuneros; the Royalist troops watched from Peñaflor de Hornija the movements of the Torrelobatón garrison, commanded by Padilla. When Padilla withdrew from Torrelobatón, the Royal troops, led by the Constable and the Admiral of Castile, rushed down to them and defeated them near Puente de Fierro, on the municipal territory of Villalar. The leaders of the Comuneros were captured and executed, which ended the revolt.
The novel El Hereje (The Heretic), published in 1998 by Miguel Delibes (1920-2010), a famous writer from Valladolid, has several scenes located in Peñaflor de Hornija.
