The municipality of Rábano (215 inhabitants in 2009; 2,775 ha; unofficial website) is located in the east of Valladolid Province, 70 km from Valladolid.
Rábano must have emerged in the 10th-11th centuries, as a borough of
the neighboring village of Peñafiel, itself mentioned for the first
time in 943. All mentions of Rábano are found in the Peñafiel archives.
The meaning of the name of the village (lit., "radish") is disputed,
but has nothing to do with radish growing. A first hypothesis refers
to ribas / rábida, derived from ribat, "barrack buildings of a
Moorish troop"; a second hypothesis refers to the Germanic anthroponym
Hraban.
