Presentation of Villardiegua de la Ribera

The municipality of Villardiegua de la Ribera (158 inhabitants in 2009; 2,900 ha) is located in the west of Zamora Province, 45 km from Zamora.
The Villardeguia Mule, indeed the representation of a bull, is a verraco de piedra (stone boar) characteristic of the Vettones, a Celtic cattle-herder people (4th-3rd centuries BC), excavated from the neighboring Castro de San Mamed. The mule is sometimes called a mare (yegua), giving a convenient etymology for the name of the village (villa de la yegua).

Symbols of Villardiegua de la Ribera

The flag and arms of Villardiegua de la Ribera are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 11 June 2001 by the Municipal Council, signed on 26 July 2001 by the Mayor, and published on 10 August 2001 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 156, p. 12,267 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Flag divided into three parts, the upper part gules, a line from the upper right part to the center of the left part, the central part azure, separated by the aforementioned line, the lower part argent a line from the lower part joining the aforementioned lines in their center.
Coat of arms: Per fess, 1. Gules a stone bull cantonned in chief with two crosses argent, 2a. Argent a Roman stele, 2b. Or a mare sable (black) [Crown not mentioned].

The Royal Academy of History turned down the original coat of arms' proposal, requiring the specific charges to be replaced by generic, easy to identify, charges. The flag's proposal was validated, as "Rectangular, with proportions 2:3, divided into three stripes, the upper stripe red, the central stripe blue and the lower stripe white, according to the attached drawing".
