Presentation of Villaferrueña

The municipality of Villaferrueña (127 inhabitants in 2010; 2,053 ha) is located in the northeast of the Province of Zamora, 80 km from Zamora.
Villaferrueña is named for iron (in Latin, ferrum), recalling that underground waters emerging in the village are red due to their high concentration in iron.

Symbols of Villaferrueña

The flag and arms of Villaferrueña are prescribed by a Decree adopted on 9 July 1997 by the Zamora Provincial Government, signed on 7 August 1997 by the President of the Government, and published on 20 August 1997 in the official gazette of Castilla y León, No. 158 (text).
The symbols are described as follows:

Flag: Rectangular flag, with proportions 2:3, made of a red panel with an horizontal heraldic pairle, the triangle at hoist blue and the horizontal stripes red.
Coat of arms: Per pale, 1. Argent a St. John clad gules a lamb argent in sinister a cross gules in dexter, 2. Azure a hammer argent a sledgehammer of the same per saltire, grafted in base waves argent and azure. The shield surmounted with a Royal crown closed.

The Royal Academy of History stated that the inclusion of a figure of St. John in the field of the coat of arms is "not compliant with good style". Undoubtedly, this could be replaced by other charges much more compliant with good style and the Spanish tradition.
There is, however, no objection to accept the proposed flag. Its description differs from the confusing description given in the Decree: "Rectangular, with proportions 2:3. Red with a Y-shape white stripe, with base in the fly's border and upper branches in the angles of the hoist (proportions are not given)".
