Flag of the University of Zadar - Image by Željko Heimer, 27 August 2014

The University of Zadar was established by the Dominicans in 1396, being thus the oldest university in Croatia, but was disbanded in 1807. The Faculty of Philosopy in Zadar was incorporated in 1955 to the University of Zagreb and transferred in 1975 to the University of Split. The integrated university of Zadar was re-established in 2002.

The symbols of the University of Zadar are prescribed in Article 3 of the University Statutes, Statut Sveučilišta u Zadru (pročišćeni tekst), last amended on 1 March 2013 (text). The emblems were adopted in 2002.
The flag is in proportions 1:2, prescribed as two-sided, the obverse blue with the golden "arms" and the reverse white with the arms of the old University and an inscription in Latin. The flags in actual use, however, are of the same design on both sides, blue with the golden "arms". The Rector confirmed that the double-sided flag was never manufactured, as it was deemed too expensive and complicated; the Statutes were
not changed for practical reasons, though.
The "arms" of the University are circular, depicting the former
lyceum of St. Demetrius, surrounded by the University name in Croatian
and Latin and years "1396" and "2002". The arms of the old University are apparently rarely, if ever, used.
