Presentation of the University of Zagreb

The University of Zagreb was formed in 1669 when the Emperor Leopold I granted the university status to the Jesuit academy in Zagreb (Neoacademia Zagrabiensis), thus being the oldest in Croatia with continuous activity. After the Jesuit disbanding, Empress Maria Theresa established on its roots the Royal Academy of Science (Regia scientiarum academia), becoming in 1874 the University of Zagreb.

Flag of the University of Zagreb

The symbols of the University of Zagreb are prescribed in Article 4 of the university Statutes, Statut Sveučilišta u Zagrebu, adopted on 25 February 2005 (text).
The flag is in proportions 1:2, blue, with the arms of the university in gold in the centre, half the flag width in diameter. The university has circular "arms" depicting the university building. Along the edge is the name and founding year (1669) in Croatian and Arabic numerals or in Latin and Roman numerals.
The flags are, apparently, used just as frequently with the Croatian as with the Latin inscription. Vertical flag are also used occasionally, although the Statutes clearly state they should be displayed horizontally.

Prior to the World War II, the university used a richly decorated unique flag (photo) painted in 1907 by a renown Croatian artist, Bela Čikoš: Sesija in 1907. The flag was apparently lost in 1945.

The abridged Guidebook of Graphical Standards of the university (PDF) includes a brief history of the "arms".
The emblem was first designed in 1955, in a slightly different rendition, most notably featuring five-pointed stars between the upper and lower part of the text. In 1969 a contest was run for a new rendition on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the University. The chosen emblem was essentially the same as used today, designed by a renown sculptor, Kosta Angeli Radovani. The stars were dropped at the time.
The emblem was slightly modified through years of use; in 2007 a new rendition, clearing the graphical layout, was made.
