Description of the flag

Orange stylized Katakana character of Na (ナ) of Nagano in white disc on orange field. The emblem expresses mountain reflected in a lake as well. Orange stands for the sun and white for snow of Nagano. Adopted 20 March 1967.
Nozomi Kariyasu, 06 May 1998

Orange flag with white disc with bowed cross. 2:3. This flag is in Smith 1980 [smi80] marked as state flag on land.
Željko Heimer, 08 December 1996

The emblem features a stylised katakana na of Nagano-ken inside a circle, in the form of a launching bird, and also showing mountains reflecting in a lake alone the hoirzontal bar of the na. This symbolises Nagano-ken's nature and citizens' friendship cutting through every barrier, making progress towards the future, and development.
The emblem was chosen from a general competition, and enacted on 26 December 1946 for use from 1 January 1947.
The colour of the emblem is in general not specified, although it is for the flag.
The white of the emblem represents the snow and purity of Japan's roof, Nagano-ken, and the bright nature of its citizens. The orange field signifies the sun pouring down onto the earth of the prefecture, communicates the four seasons, and symbolises (something to do with autumn leaves - Nozomi?) natural colour, lively conditions and development.
Jonathan Dixon, 1 October 2009

The orange has nothing to do with autumn leaves but the sun light is pouring down onto the earth of the prefecture and shining in a natural colors vividly through the four seasons which symbolises powerful prefecture and its developing fugure.
