Broekhuizen [former municipality]
On 1 Jan 2001 Broekhuizen merged with the former municipalities of Grubbenvorst
and Horst to form the new municipality of
Horst aan de Maas.
On 1 Jan 2000 the population was 1.918; area: 11.66 km². Settlements:
Broekhuizen (seat), Broekhuizenvorst, De Heide, Genenberg, Ooijen, Stokt,
Zeelberg.
Broekhuizen is in north Limburg on the western bank of the Maas, opposite
Arcen, with which there is an eternal fight
for the title of 'best brassband' (fanfare) of the Netherlands.
It belonged to Prussia until the French revolution, being a part of 'Opper
Gelre'. The municipality gained national fame by Joost Nuizel's song "Toch
ben ik blij dat ik je niet vergeten ben", where the singer was accompanied
by the Broekhuizen fanfare and the female choir of Broekhuizenvorst.
I suppose the checky vertical stripe on the flag symbolizes the Maas
river. The flag was adopted 20 May 1968.
