Municipal flag

Laarbeek is a merger of the former municipalities of Aarle-Rixtel, Beek en Donk and Lieshout (1 Jan 1997). The flag was approved by the High Council of Nobility on 23 Jun 1998. It was designed by H. van Beek.
The municipality has nearly 22.000 inhabitants, of whom 5.800 live in Aarle-Rixtel, 9.700 in Beek en Donk (seat). 4.400 in Lieshout and 1.400 in Mariahout. Its surface is 5.586 ha.
The municipal councils of all three former municipalities agreed unanimously on 8 Mar 1994 upon the new name of "Laarbeek". "Laar" is derived from the Laar, the central area of the three old municipalities and "beek" from the several brooks crossing the old municipalities.

Laarbeek Coat of Arms

Laarbeek Coat of Arms image from this website.

Approved 17 Jul 1999. The wavy blue bar symbolizes "beek" (brook) in the name of Laarbeek. The mill-irons have been derived from the arms of Dirk de Rover, the first known Lord of Aarle-Rixtel and Beek en Donk. Both villages are represented in the two mill-irons. The fleur-de-lis is the symbol of Lieshout. The Virgin Mary was the patron saint of the abbey of Floreffe, which was very influential in Lieshout, and the fleur-de-lis was her symbol.

Aarle-Rixtel Historical flag

Old Aarle-Rixtel Shipmate Flagchart : http://www.flagchart.net

This flag was unofficial, but used frequently since "times immemorial". The colors are probably derived from the blue robe of the Virgin Mary (patron saint of Aarle), and the red one of Margaret, parish patron saint of Rixtel. The local Guilds were known as "De Blauwe Schut" (the blue shot) and "De Rode Schut" (the red shot). According to old arms-colors the municipal colors ought to be: yellow, black, red, and white (colors of Brabant-Limburg).

Beek en Donk (former municipality

former municipality of Beek en Donk Shipmate Flagchart : http://www.flagchart.net

This flag was adopted by municipal resolution on 19 Jul 1956. Green is derived from the color of the Guild of St. Anthony in the parish of Beek. Red from the Guild of St. Leonhard in the parish of Donk. White is used by the sports club "Sparta" in both parishes. Moreover white has been added to make the flag more cheerful. The municipal resolution refers to the flag of Iran, which is the reason why the white stripes have been narrowed.
