The Panamanian Red Cross (Cruz Roja Panameña) was founded in
the beginning of the XXth century by Doña Matilde de Obaldio de
Mallet. This foundation was sanctioned by law #40, voted on 1
March 1917. Decree #34, issued on 10 June 1917, appointed the
first Execeutive Committee of the company. The ICRC recognized
the Panamanian Red Cross as a national branch in June 1925 and
allowed it to use the red cross on white emblem. Panama joined
the Geneva Convention through law #35 of 23 November 1957,
published in the Gaceta Oficial #13432, dated 3 janvier 1958. The
law sanctioned the unofficial adhesion dated 12 August 1949. The
current statutes if the Panamanian Red Cross were prescribed in
1968 by Decree #1451. The general rules of the company were
approved in 1977-78. Panama approved the additional protocoles I
and II to the Geneva Convention by law #21, dated 31 May 1995.
The Panamanian Red Cross is ruled by a General Assembly, a
21-member Central Committee, provincial chapters and district
committees.
The flag of the Panamanian Red Cross is white with the Red Cross,
and Cruz Roja Panameña written in black below the cross.
