It is a fairily typical portuguese municipal flag,
with the coat of arms centered on a red and
white gyronny (city rank) background. Flag
and arms adopted and published in the official journal
Diário da República : III
Série in 1987.01.23. These arms and flag were adopted upon the
upgrade of the municipality seat to city status in 1984.06.28 and are a trivial
change of the former arms and flag.
António Martins-Tuválkin, 20 Apr 2007
The arms are Argent issuant from a base barry wavy Azure and Argent a
rivermill wheel Gules and in chief a sun Or with 16 rays on a roundel Azure
and flanked by a bundle of three maize ears Or leaved Vert pointing down in
dexter and a bunch of grapes Purple leaved Vert in sinister. Mural crown argent
with five visible towers (city rank) and white
scroll reading in black upper case letters "Cidade de Fafe".

The municipal website of Fafe shows the
coat of arms on a white background and calls it
"bandeira.jpg
" (meaning flag),
but the real flag of Fafe municipality has a white over red gyronny background.
I’m quite surprised to see this error in the municipal website…
António Martins-Tuválkin, 14 Jul 1999, and
Jorge Candeias, 15 Jul 1999
The former arms and flag adopted and published in the official journal
Diário do Governo : I
Série in 1940.06.14, a remakably late date. These included the
usual town attributes, four visible crown towers, "vila" instead of "cidade"
ond the scroll, and plain red flag.
António Martins-Tuválkin, 20 Apr 2007
Fafe municipality had 52 757 inhabitants in 2001 and consists of 25
communes covering 218,87 km². It is part of
Braga District, traditional province
Minho, 1999 ref. adm. region Entre Douro e Minho,
current C.C.R. / NUTS II Norte, and NUTS III Ave.
