It is a typical Portuguese communal flag, with the coat of arms centred on a quartered of green and yellow field.

Shield Or, three olive trees eradicated Vert fruited Or ordered 2:1, in centre a horn Gules chained Sable. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black capitals: "OLIVAL BASTO". The design was made by Álvaro D'Albergaria.
Meaning:
The trees are symbolizing the importance of olive in the region and thea are also a canting element. The horn is alluding to the old local coach station of Mala Posta.

Shield Argent, set fessy a cogwheel Azure and a sixfold honeycomb Or lined Sable ordered 1:2:1:2, in chief an inescutcheon Gules displaying a fessy sledgehammer Or and four quatrefoils Vert (acc. to description: Or), in base an olive tree eradicated Vert fruited Sable. Mural crown Argent with four visible towers (town rank) and white scroll reading in black capitals: "PÓVOA DE SANTO ADRIÂO".
Meaning:
The cogwheel is symbolizing labour and industries, the honeycomb is alluding to the growth of the settlement and its cores. The tree is alluding to the importance of olive oil in the past. The inescutcheon displays the arms of the local patron saint St. Adrian, a martyr.
