Presentation of Adana

The Metropolitan Municipality of Adana (1,736,564 inhabitants; 19,450 ha) is located in south-eastern Turkey, on the Mediterranean Sea. Adana is the unofficial capital of Çukurova (in Turkish, "Low Plain"), the region once known as Cilicia, made today of the Mersin, Adana, Osmaniye and Hatay Provinces.

Adana was one of the first industrialized and economically developed town of Turkey. A mid-size trading town until mid-1800s, Adana saw attraction from European traders after the major cotton supplier, USA, suffered from the Civil War.
Adana is the marketing and distribution center for Çukurova, where cotton, wheat, corn, soybean, barley, grapes and citrus fruits are produced. Farmers of Adana produce half of the corn and soybean harvest in Turkey. 34% of Turkey's peanut and 29% of Turkey's orange is harvested in Adana. Cooperatives played significant role in the economy of the town. Çukobirlik, Turkey's largest cooperative, has 36,064 members in 10 provinces and offers services from planting to marketing of cotton, peanut, soybean, sunflower and canola.
Adana's large-scale industry is based mostly on agriculture. Textile and leather are the major industries, constituting 29% of Adana's manufacturing; plant oil and processed food manufacturing plants are also numerous. As of 2008, Adana has 11 companies in Turkey's top 500 industrial firms. The largest company of Adana, Temsa Global, in automotive manufacturing, has more than 2,500 employees and manufactures 4,000 buses annually. Marsan-Adana is the largest margarine and plant oil factory in Turkey. Advansa Sasa is Europe's largest polyester manufacturer, employing 2,650.
The golden age for the architecture of Adana was the late 15th and the 16th century when the Ramadanid rulers chose Adana as their capital. The town grew rapidly during that period with many new neighborhoods built. Most of the historical landmarks of Adana were built during this period, thus Mamlukand Seljuqid architecture is dominant in Adana's architectural history.

Flag of Adana

The flag of Adana (photo), also used vertically (photo), is white with the municipality's emblem in the middle. "Büyükşehir Belediyesi" means "Metropolitan Municipality".

The emblem features two of the town's landmarks, the Stone Bridge (Taşköprü) and the Great Clock Tower (Büyük Saat).
The bridge across the river Sarus (modern Seyhan) was probably constructed during the reign of the emperor Hadrian (117-138). The 300 meters long and 13 meters high construction was erected by an engineer named Auxentius and restored by the Byzantine emperor Justinian. The monument was again restored by the Abbasid caliph al-Ma'mun in the ninth century, and several times under Ottoman rule. It is still in use, and the only archaeological monument in the city.
[Livius, 28 July 2015]
"It is such a magnificent work that it has no match. The clock bell rings but in fact it is the sound of the state," wrote poet Fani Efendi in his poem inscribed on the clock tower built by Governor Abidin Pasha in Adana in 1882.

The flag of Adana BTÜ (photo, photo, photo, photo, photo) was white with the university's former emblem in canton, and some hexagonal elements from the emblem pasted together.

The rationale of the emblem is explained with different hexagonal structures:
- chemical structures;
- snowflakes [source of life];
- honeycomb [working nature];
- a traditional, hexagonal door woodcarving [Anatolia];
- the structural diagram of benzene [science];
- screws and nuts [construction, industry];
Accordingly, the emblem shows the perfect form of nature, science, hard work, life and motherland.

The emblem includes three shades of blue, specified as follows:

		Pantone      CMYK         RGB
Lighter blue    7461 C	  78 28 0  0   13 147 210
Median blue     3015 C   100 30 0 20    0 115 124
Darker blue     3025 C   100 17 0 51    0  89 132
The font typeface is Futura Bold.

Adana Chamber of Commerce

ATO (website), an institution that is one of the oldest Chambers of Commerce and Industry in Turkey, was founded in 1894 in compliance with the orders of the Ministry of Commerce and Agriculture with the aim of controlling and regulating commerce, and particularly cotton trade. During those early years cotton exportation was an important activity in the region and the Chamber was established to develop and extend this trade; the pressure exerted by foreign buyers was also taken into consideration.
Between the years 1909-1911 our Chamber took the Chamber of Agriculture within its system and worked under the title of Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. After 1911 the Chamber separated from the Chamber of Agriculture and, beginning with the First World War, it was known as Adana Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In 1966, upon the request of our industrialist members, in agreement with the Chamber Council and with permission given by the Ministry of Commerce, a separate Chamber of Industry was founded. Thereafter the title of the Chamber was changed to Adana Chamber of Commerce according to Law No. 5174.

The flag of ATO (photo, photo, photo, photo) is white with the organization's emblem.

Cotton cultivation began before the establishment of Adana Commodity Exchange. Due to the lack of transportation and export facilities it could only meet the needs of the domestic market. In the 1800s after the Adana-Mersin railway was built by the French, cotton trade started to develop and accordingly there emerged need of building a market linked with international markets. Due to the Exchanges Regulations, the first activities of Adana Commodity Exchange was carried out under Adana Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
The Adana Commodity Exchange (website) was officially established on 4 September 1913 and was the second commodity exchange established in Turkey. The Adana Commodity Exchange started its activities with official ceremony on 17 September 1913.

The flag of the Adana Commodity Exchange (photo, photo, photo, photo) is white with the organization's emblem. On some copies of the flag (photo, photo, photo), the emblem lacks the two outer rings.
The flag was also used, until 2016, with the emblem in a slightly different color scheme (photo, photo, photo, photo, photo, photo).

In March 2016, Adanaspor defeated Adana Demirspor (1-0) in their opponent's stadium. To celebrate the victory in the Adana derby, the players planted in the middle of the central circle of the stadium a flag (photo, photo) horizontally divided orange-white-orange with the Turkish national flag in canton and the writing "ŞAMPİYON ADANASPOR" (Adanaspor Champion) in orange letters in the white stripe. Orange and white, the club's colours, recall that Adanais a main center of cotton (a cotton boll is featured on the club's emblem) and orange cultivation in Turkey. The players are nicknamed the Taurus Tigers for their jersey, vertically striped orange and white.
All Turkish football fans immediately identified the (kind of) re- enacting of Graeme Souness' legendary act of bravado at the end of the final of the 1996 Turkish Cup won by Galatasaray.
