Flag of Şile

The flag of Şile (photo), also used vertically (photo), is white with the municipality's emblem. "Belediyesi" means "Municipality".
The emblem of the municipality features the historic Şile lighthouse.

Situated at the most critical point on the Anatolian side of the Bosphorus. the lighthouse was built in 1859 by a French constructor. The highest lighthouse of Turkey (60 m above sea level), it is made of a tower built in 110 cm thick knitted stones. The height of the tower is 19 m. The tower was painted to white and black bands for best visibility in daylight.
The visual sight distance of the lighthouse is 20 nautical miles. Flashing characteristics are Fl .W. 20 sec with red sector.
Oil lamps primarily used were replaced by high intensity filament lamps as a source of light; illumination is currently provided by a 1000 W electric lamp. To increase visibility from a long distance, the light source is strengthened by eight catadioptric cylinder lenses, with an optical distance of 925 mm. Octagonal optical panels are placed on a circular platform floating on a mercury bath. A fixed light source illuminates on focus; flashes are produced during the rotation of the platform.
The lighthouse is equipped with a weight that moves vertically down and up the tower on steel wires. As the weight falls, the clock is driven; when the weight reaches the bottom of the tower, the clock stops until the weight is wound back up to the top of its course. Accordingly, the lighthouse keepers has to wind up the optic clock with a large winding handle attached to the mechanism that is located immediately below the optical system. This system is similar to a clockwork mechanism. Lighthouse keepers still winds mechanism every two hours.
The mechanism and optical panels are still in use. The lighthouse and guardian house are registered as national heritage by the Directorate General of Coastal Safety.
