See also:Edenvale is located on the east of Witwatersrand (East Rand). The town
began in 1903 as a small settlement named Rietfontein which had sprung
up around the Rietfontein Gold Mine.
Following the re-organisation of local government in South Africa in
1995, Edenvale was amalgamated with some surrounding areas, including
Modderfontein, and part of Tembisa to form the Lethabong municipality.
This arrangement ended in December 2000 when Edenvale became part of the
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.
According to the Minutes of a Town Council meeting of 27 February 1985,
it was agreed that Mr SW Pienaar, a civic heraldry expert was to submit
to the Council two proposals for a municipal flag for Edenvale. It was
suggested that the flag be based on, or incorporate in some way, the
municipal coat of arms.

The blazon of the arms which was registered by the South African Bureau of Heraldry
and granted to Edenvale on 06 January 1972 is as follows:
ARMS: Per chevron embowed Gules and Or, in chief dexter a pick and
shovel saltire wise, handles downwards, and sinister a grenade enflamed,
all Or, and in base a cinquefoil Vert
CREST: A rising sun Or
WREATH AND MANTLING: Or and Gules
MOTTO: CONSILIO ET PRUDENTIA (With Prudence and Vision).
The flag subsequently taken into use in 1986 for Edenvale comprised
three horizontal stripes of green, yellow (gold) and red with the shield
from the municipal arms being centrally placed on the yellow stripe.
The shield is divided into three, the upper right (chief dexter)
compartment having a gold pick and shovel on a right background. The
upper left compartment (chief sinister) has a gold exploding grenade on
a red background while the base has a green 5-leafed flower on a gold
background. The pick and shovel depict the workers in the town
(Edenvale being formerly a mining town) while the grenade represents the
factories, industries and commerce. The flower stands for all the
people of the town.
Following the re-organisation of local government, this flag is no longer
in use.
