The shield is divided per bend sinister battled of five merlons embattled. Above right is a silver (= white) bowl in a red field. Below left is a blue chalice.
Meaning:
The five gables are symbolising the manors of Dengelsberg, Georgenthal, Kluvensiek, Osterrade and Steinwehr, which formed the municipality in 1928. The double crenelly line is taken from the seal of Sigridus Dosenrode, manorial lord of Osterrade, dated 1366. The Bronze Age bowl was found in a grave and is a proof of early settlements in the area. The chalice from 1630 had been endowed by Benedict und Christina von Ahlefeld, owners of Osterrade and indicates the importance of Bovenau as a parochial village.
